Hatchling

30Jun07

June 29, 2007: Hatchling! It looks like one of the eggs did hatch yesterday. The Anna’s has been very active today feeding her hatchling and I’ve seen a little beak popping up to feed several times today. It’s hard to tell if there is more than one hatchling in the nest, [...]

Hatch perhaps

29Jun07

June 28, 2007: Went out to check on the Anna’s today and saw her again chasing bugs over the yard. When she returned to the nest it was the first time I’ve seen her light on the edge of the nest. From the edge she popped her head in the nest several [...]

A light snack

27Jun07

June 27, 2007: Was out in the yard in the early evening and watched as the Anna’s hunted down a bug in mid-flight. It’s something to watch a tiny flying bug being chased by a tiny flying bird. By my count she has been on her eggs for 16 days now. [...]

Upkeep

19Jun07

June 19, 2007: I put a video camera out in the garden today and let it roll for an hour. For all but a few minutes of that tape the Anna is just sitting there minding her nest but in those few minutes she left she decided to do a little nest upkeep. [...]

June 14, 2007: As you might imagine the Anna’s takes her nest duties seriously. I’ve hardly seen her off the nest in the last couple of days. The most I’ve seen her off is for a few minutes, sometimes much less. A 30-second circuit to fly across the yard drink some [...]

Nesting

12Jun07

June 11, 2007: The first day that the Anna’s has been sitting on her nest most of the day. She does fly off from time to time for short periods, presumably to feed. To get a scale of just how small the nest is if you look at the left side of [...]

June 10, 2007: No nest building today. Instead the Anna’s mostly perched in the tree where she could keep her eye on her nest. Some unsuspecting house sparrows strayed a bit too close and she chased them out of the yard. I have a good section of Cape fuchsia (phygelius (Scrophulariaceae)) [...]

June 9, 2007: It rained today but that didn’t stop the nest construction from humming along. I watched as she flew undaunted back and forth in the rain gathering bits of fluff for her nest. She’s taken a good bit of moss and lichen from the old plum tree so that her nest [...]

New neighbor

11Jun07

Seattle, June 8, 2007: Hovering there giving me the eye at one foot away I could tell the new neighbor had something on her mind. Mostly because I’ve never seen a hummingbird be so bold. Turns out an Anna’s hummingbird (Calypte anna) is building a nest in my craggily old plum tree and [...]
